In the past several weeks, the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has challenged and even upended many social norms we once took for granted. “Social distancing” has become the status quo; entire families are staying sheltered in place (by choice or by necessity); business organizations and institutions of learning are adapting to dramatic changes in how they operate. Throughout all of this, LanguageBird continues to offer its online language classes with free resources during the coronavirus outbreak.
We know that self-quarantine and social isolation bring a unique set of challenges. For many of us, including hard-working students, life must go on despite the global crisis – even if our lifestyle must be temporarily amended for purposes of safety. Studies have shown that social isolation can have detrimental effects on teenagers, and indeed students of all ages. For example, prolonged isolation can result in depression, anxiety, stress, and even a weakened immune response.
However, the good news is that social distancing does not have to equal social isolation. Innovative technologies such as Zoom and Skype allow people to connect over the Internet, and engage in real-time, face-to-face dialogue. At LanguageBird, we’ve decided to leverage such technology to continue our mission of education. We’ve made the move to transition to 100% online courses during this time of crisis, so that our instructors and students can remain safe as they continue their fascinating journeys through language and culture.
In addition, at LanguageBird we have several free resources that students can use to further their language acquisition goals, including:
- Our Language Resource Library. Our curated collection of the premier resources in language instruction will now be available to everyone from our website. These resources will enable students to continue their research into the vocabulary, grammar, usage and culture of their target language.
- Language Learning Blogs. Our language learning blogs feature plenty of tips and tricks from experts in each target language. The articles featured in these blogs offer many practical examples of language use cases, and explore a variety of cultural aspects that will inform, enlighten, and maybe even entertain inquisitive readers.
- Chirp Room Chat Rooms. Our chat rooms allow physically separated students to gather together in a virtual environment and practice their language skills on one another, with a language expert as the moderator. This resource is currently available in Spanish, French, German, and Mandarin.
- “Bird Bites.” Our 5 minute “Bird Bite” videos feature our expert instructors as they break down difficult or complicated concepts from their target language into simple, accessible nuggets of information. They also share insight into the history and culture of the language.
In a world that is increasingly oriented towards fear, loneliness, and social isolation, LanguageBird offers opportunities to grow in knowledge, and maintain human connections while doing so. We hope that you will take advantage of our online language courses, and many free educational resources, as you continue in your quest to learn a new language.
